Renewal Project II

Public Safety Center
Timeline: Groundbreaking Fall 2007

Planning is under way for a state-of-the-art public safety center, housing both Roseburg police and fire departments. Located on the side of Douglas Avenue and occupying the block between Stephens and Court streets, the 37,000 square foot building would include:

  • Two-story drive-through bays facing Douglas, allowing fire trucks
  • to exit quickly and re-enter easily without obstructing traffic.
  • Living and kitchen quarters for firefighters.
  • Police Department office and evidence storage space
  • Several meeting rooms, including community meeting space
  • Emergency operations center

The Roseburg Public Safety Building will represent the first public building constructed downtown by the City since the completion of City Hall in 1972. It also allows the City to finally bring up to date the woefully inadequate downtown fire station.

A separate, 9,000 square-foot storage building would be constructed at the north end of the property to help both departments consolidate some of the equipment and materials that are now being stored at several different sites around town.

CURRENT PROJECT RELATED ACTIVITIES

  • "Value engineering" by city staff and architects to find the most cost-effective way to construct a public safety building that must last 50 to 75 years.
  • Negotiations for purchase of property within the project boundaries.
  • Sale of approximately $15,000,000 worth of bonds for the Public Safety Center and other urban renewal projects at the very favorable interest rate of 4%.
