Question: Can you give me any safety tips on the use of a spa?
Answer:
Yes, there are several safety points that all spa owners should be aware of:
- All spas should be protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFI). If yours is a portable spa, it should already have this protection pre-wired. The GFI is designed to protect you from electrocution should there be an electrical problem. The GFI should be tested monthly by pushing the "test" button on the unit to make sure it is operating properly. If you notice an electrical problem in your spa, the power can also be disconnected by locating your electrical panel in your home and switching off the breaker that powers your spa.
- The maintenance of a spa requires the use of several chemicals, from cleaners and polishes to defoamers and chlorine. These chemicals may appear harmless but can be very harmful when stored or used incorrectly. You will have a medical emergency on your hands if chlorine is ingested or splashed into the eyes. Always follow the directions listed on the containers and store them in an appropriate place such as a locker or secure garage area and always out of reach of children.
- Alcohol and hot water (contrary to popular belief) don't mix. Alcohol is a sedative and when consumed in a spa, even in small quantities, is a recipe for disaster.
- Make sure all intakes in the spa are protected with a cover or screen to prevent a small child from becoming sucked into the intake and trapped underwater. Unfortunately, this tragedy has happened in the past.
- Finally, as I am sure you are well aware, children need to be supervised at all times. This is especially true when water is part of the equation. The best location for a spa or pool is one that can be secured behind a fence. In addition, I highly recommend you purchase a cover that can be locked down in place, preventing a child from entering while unattended.
