Here's What The Roseburg Fire Department Does:

The fire department is the only department that is locally situated, staffed, trained and equipped to respond to all types of emergencies. The fire department responds to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and severe winds as well as to man-made catastrophes such as hazardous materials spills, arson and terrorism. As such, the fire department is an all-hazard, all-risk response entity.

Fire suppression:
Fire suppression is the traditional role of the fire department. On any day the department may combat fires in residential, industrial, commercial and wildland settings. Each scenario requires specialized training, equipment, and varying levels of resources. Roseburg has become more dependent on cross-training the firefighters to cover an increased variety of threats/hazards to which they respond.

Emergency Medical Service (EMS):
From basic life support to advanced life support all Roseburg firefighters are trained as EMT's. Eighty-three percent of the department is trained to an EMT Intermediate or higher level. This allows Roseburg to provide life-saving procedures such as advanced cardiac care and the administration of drugs. In the past two decades, EMS calls have outpaced fire suppression calls and are now 63 percent of the annual call volume.

Hazardous Materials:
Hazardous materials response requires specially trained hazmat technicians to have the knowledge of a chemist in addition to fire fighting skills. In addition, hazardous materials technicians train for weapons of mass destruction (WMD) preparedness and response. Roseburg provides 76 percent of the trained personnel for this regions State Hazardous Materials team. Hazardous materials incidents can range from small, such as a fire in a private pool house where chlorine is stored, to a large train derailment that spills anhydrous ammonia, gasoline or some other hazardous or flammable substance. Trains and thousands of trucks carrying potentially lethal cargo travel through Roseburg each day, and storage and use has become commonplace, the potential for a hazardous materials incident is great.

Code Enforcement:
The fire department is charged with enforcing building, occupancy and fire prevention codes. This involves enforcing the laws
