Policeman’s Dollar Stolen; Vagrancy Charge Holds Man.

From the Roseburg News Review, June 2, 1966.

Ronald Steven Endershey, 23, a transient, came into the city police station about 9:35 p.n. Wednesday to seek assistance, claiming he was without funds.

The officer on duty started a routine investigation of the man’s record, but was called away from the station briefly. While the night dispatcher’s back was turned, a dollar bill, which had been left on the counter for the son of another officer on duty, disappeared, along with Endershey.

Later, someone called the police station asking about this individual. The officer who took the call recognized the voice as that of Endershey and asked him to return to the station. He did.

Theft Admitted

The man admitted taking the bill to buy a sandwich and a couple of beers. He had two nickels left, which he turned over to the officer. He was booked for Vagrancy. Investigation showed he is on probation from a petty larceny charge out of Portland. Further investigation is pending.
